Wednesday, October 19th the Teamsters Local 623 Women's Caucus will be out at UPS gates handing out treats for Halloween and educating the membership on breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. For every woman that receives a breast cancer diagnosis, a number of family members, friends and other loved ones are impacted. October is breast cancer awareness month and the Teamsters Local 623 Women's Caucus is doing their part to educate Teamster sisters.
Did you know?
- Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American and Canadian women, regardless of race or ethnicity.
- Men get breast cancer, too. However, less than one percent of breast cancers occur in men. It is most common in men between 60 and 70 years of age.
- The Centers for Disease Control says that regular mammograms can provide early detection of breast cancer. They recommend that women 50 to 74 years old have a screening mammogram every two years.
- For women 40 to 49 years old, it’s important to talk with your doctor about when to start and how often to screen for a mammogram.
- Young women with a history of breast cancer in their families are encouraged to talk with their doctors about their history and any concerns.
- The Mayo Clinic recommends women and their doctors discuss benefits, risks and limitation of mammograms and decide together the best course of action.
- For more information on screening tests, visit the CDC info page, here.
